New Method of Recording

Lately I've been playing my guitars quite a bit since the feeling has really started to come back in my hands. So, Monday night I went to Brasswinds in search of some new recording software. They had this awesome little packaged unit called an Mbox 2 mini. Included in the package is the software you need (Pro Tools) and a USB device that connects to your computer. The USB device (pictured right) connects to your computer and takes the headache work out of trying to connect an instrument to your computer. I was told by the alleged guru at Brasswinds that this is as close to going to a pro studio that an amateur recording artist can get to. The device has 4 inputs for instruments, be it guitars or whatever, and one for a microphone. The software allegedly has tons of bells and whistles too. You can record a ton of tracks, overlap recording with headphones, etc. Very similar to Cakewalk.
So, I decide to buy it. I looked at the box beforehand and it said that it was compatible with Windows XP and Vista. Ok...cool. However, I have Windows 7 on my laptop for home. I thought it would be good to go.

Nope.

The software installs fine, but won't launch on Windows 7. Awesome. Their website is splattered with warnings about it and so is their customer service line. I've been watching the forums on their site about what people are saying about it, and Digidesign is working on a patch/update for Windows 7. It's just not out yet.

But, I got another laptop from work with XP on it last night. I installed the software and launched it and it came up fine, so I'm hoping to try it out this weekend. I'll keep ya'll posted.

Bad-ass Solos

Okay...Jonny here. Sorry, no random youtube video in this post. But, since I've been trying to regain my honor as a guitar player, I figured I'd post this. I love listening to good 'ol fashioned guitar solos. They don't make them like they used to. I've been playing my Fender electric more lately because it doesn't take as much effort to hold down the strings. (My fingers have not yet returned to normal strength yet.) So, I've been trying to play more 'grungier' stuff. This, of course got me thinking about solos. Here's a couple off the top of my head:

Metallica - The Black Album - Unforgiven

Usually I don't care for Kirk Hammet's solos. He's sort of an 'all over the place' kind of player. His solos don't typically mimic the song's rhythm or overall sound. However, there's something about the way he plays the solo in Unforgiven that just rocks. He makes that guitar just wail. It might be all the instruments playing as a unit that really makes it work, but this solo is one of the best in my opinion.

Ozzy Osbourne - No More Tears

Ah...Zakk Wylde. If I could play like this dude, I would ask for no more. Give it a listen.

Following a Massachusetts high school petition protesting the treatment of dogs in Call of Duty: World at War, the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is now joining the protest as well. Upon seeing news of the protest, PETA sent publisher Activision Blizzard an invitation to take one of its "Developing Empathy for Animals" seminars for free. The organization has also sent the company a package of Nintendogs for the DS, which it deems "dog-friendly." PETA hopes the puppy sim will help influence Activision's treatment of animals in future games, with the organization's blog noting "perhaps the next Call of Duty game will have you unlock achievements for petting the dogs you encounter and going on walks or playing Frisbee with them."
